So, you're interested in writing for us?
What we are
Perceptive Travel webzine has a unique niche of offering up travel narratives from published book authors, plus travel book and world music reviews. Although the bloggers do not need to be authors, we try to maintain this unique positioning on the blog by publishing pieces that inspire, that provoke, that look at new angles, and that aren't afraid to dive into places that nobody else is talking about. We could probably even be called commercially suicidal: we do not run the usual blog posts about top beaches, where to get wasted in Barcelona, photos of the day, or "How to..." posts followed by a quick list of questionable advice. We write about strange places, look at places in an offbeat way, and talk about books, music, and movies related to travel.
What we want
We want a new blogger who is well-read, an experienced traveler, and a great writer. We also want someone who understands the basics: how to use Wordpress, how to resize and post photos, how to interview someone, how to edit simple videos, how to write in grammatically correct sentences with good spelling. It should go without saying, but we also want someone who has something to say. Plenty to say is even better. A basic understanding of social media promotion and how search engines work is required as well.
Pay and Requirements
The writer we hire will start with one post per week on a designated day and can move to 6-8 posts per month in the second month. He/she will be paid once at month at a per-post rate dependent on site revenue, which is currently $10 per post. Obviously this is not going to earn you a whole lot unless your powers of self-promotion double or triple our traffic. So you'd better be doing it because you'd enjoy it.
What you need to do
If you are interested in applying, we need the usual plus something unusual. The usual is that we need your background, your writing experience, links to a portfolio site or things you've written, and a paragraph on why you'd fit in well. The unusual part is we need a sample blog post from you---what you would write first for Perceptive Travel on your first week. We will use the best three or four that we receive as guest posts and payment for those not chosen for the position will be a book or a t-shirt sent to your address. For the person we eventually hire, that post will be paid for at the normal rate. Your submission implies agreement to these terms
To enter, send all of the above to blogger (at) perceptivetravel.com. Include a photo or two to illustrate the post, but scaled down to a maximum of 450 pixels wide. Any entries with larger photos will be automatically disqualified. The deadline is March 5, 2010, though we reserve the right to cut this off early. Talk to you soon!
