Hostels and Cheap Hotels
From the Carpathian Mountains to the islands of the South Pacific, where there are travelers there are independent hostels. Frequently set up by travelers for travelers, backpackers hostels are the accommodation of choice for the savvy globetrotter. These days they’ve left the old ‘bunkhouse’ stereotype in the past, too. There are eco-lodges, activity hostels (where you can go diving or climbing, say), and chic urban hangouts fill the cities of the world. There are hostels on boats, in trees and in caves… there are even hostels in refurbished prisons!
If you’re traveling on a budget, cheap hotels are generally adequate, but rarely allow you to meet anyone else on the road. A hostel, by contrast, is as much a social experience as it is a bed for the night. And it’s not just mixed dormitories and bunk beds, either – most hostels have a private room or two. They may not be quite as cheap as the more communal option, but they’re still a temptingly affordable accommodation option that keeps you on the road just that little bit longer…
